Phase II or End of Summer

Well it’s been a long summer and it’s almost done.. I haven’t officially updated in awhile, so here we go..

Phase I of “The Lonely Grave of Frank Grimes” is about 99% complete. John Gray and I are just about done with our sessions and I’m about to start Phase II. Big thanks to the Mother Brain crew for all their efforts in getting this done. So far, everything sounds tight as hell. Speaking of which – it’s about time I dropped the second single from the album. Look out for that real soon!

Phase II is going to bring me well into winter. I plan on tapping into some old roots with this phase and working with some old and new friends. More to follow in the coming weeks, months, etc..

2Ce and I are just about done with “Ace & Deuce Present: Rhythm & Cool Volume 1”. He’s currently recording the last couple of tracks and then we’ll be dropping it for all of you to enjoy. Also, 2Ce is going to be releasing his new mixtape “My City Part 2CE: Capital” some time soon as well. Keep yer peepers peeped on that.

I got to hear some rough cuts from Notebook Noise’s follow up to “Snares, Hooks and Rhymebooks” this past weekend and this shit is dope! And I’m not just saying that because I have some beats on there. This album is going to be sick and I’m proud to be apart of it. Also working on an instrumental album as well as some other hot shit I can’t really speak about right now..

A lot has been going on with recordings, demos, remixes and so on and so on.. so just a quick update: I’m busy getting new shit done. The Lonely Grave of Frank Grimes is still being worked and hopefully we’ll see it before years end. It sounds really great so far and look forward to getting it out there to everyone.

I also have my hands in other projects, but I won’t say anything until we get closer to knowing what is what..

The Lonely Downgrade..

It’s been a long couple of months (6 to be exact) working on The Lonely Grave of Frank Grimes and I have come to a decision, that was not easy to make..

Instead of releasing TLGFG as a full length album I’ve decided to simply make it an EP. I’ve been struggling the past few weeks now to kick out some beats that encompass the overall sound and feel of the first batch.. but it just aint happening.. so instead of forcing something I’m not feeling, I’ve decided to downgrade the full length album to an EP.. I’ve done what I wanted to do with these recordings and really want to move forward with the next batch of projects I have lined up..

I’ll have more info as we get closer to completing the EP. We have two more tracks to get recorded – as well as one instrumental track I’ll be composing to close out the EP.

I’ll also be posting some news on the new projects I’ll be working on very soon..

A Plate of Patience..

So I’m officially back from NC and my plate is full.. I’m currently working on some new tracks for various emcees and some side projects.. got some new mixes back from John this week.. working on the second batch of “The Lonely Grave..” instrumentals to complete the album (I would like to see an official release in July or August) and I have begun work on a new single titled “The Kid’s Always Hungry” that will be released later this month via BandCamp..

I’ve decided to push back “Dark Stanley Will Have His Revenge on Dr. Katzenjammer” to later this year, possibly early 2012.. with everything that’s going on right now my focus needs to be on the latest projects that have presented themselves to me.. I’ll give you a full run down in a week or so once I know everything is a-go!

My music is plagued with Simpsons references.. so why not do the same with my alter-alter ego..

Like previous projects I've worked on, certain instrumentals don't make the cut for the final album. This rings true for "The Lonely Grave of Frank Grimes".

Im resurrecting Dr. Katzenjammer yet again to bring you "Dark Stanley Will Have His Revenge on Dr. Katzenjammer". A more electronica/dance type album somewhat like the previous "23 Hour Murder Party" release.

Instead of just taking the rejected beats from "The Lonely Grave.." I'll be putting together brand new tracks specifically for this album. There will be guests unlike "Murder Party" and it will even get it's own Bandcamp page.

Other than that im currently working on beats for the new Notebook Noise album, getting some beats together for SOD, remixing some 2Ce tracks, writing new material with my band Pedro Negro and planning a wedding.

Flipping through Pandora this morning one of the stations played something I had not listened to in a long time. Dan The Automator’s “A Much Better Tomorrow”.. jesus christ this takes me back.. I used to own this on vinyl back when I thought I was a DJ.. this album helped shape the sound, and way, I would make music..

I was always listening to him as well as DJ Shaodow “Preemptive Strike”, Kid Koala “Carpal Tunnel Syndrome”, Dr. Octagon – The Instrumentals (more Automator) and Deltron3030 (also, more Automator).. these albums are what shaped me as a musician and introduced me to the world of underground hiphop.. it was like nothing I had heard before..

I think I know what I’m doing over the summer..

Also, got to check out, what I believe, is the final mix of my “Complicated” remix I did for Fluid Minds.. P. Tugz provided some sickness for the track as well.. I can’t wait for the whole album to drop..

This weekend 2Ce and I are heading into Melody Sunrise Studios with John Gray. 2Ce will be laying down his vocals for “’Posed To Do” which will be featured on “The Lonely Grave of Frank Grimes” and vocals for my remix of the Fluid Minds track “This Song Needs More Cowbell”. If you’ve come out for any of 2Ce’s shows you’ve already heard it. Hopefully we’ll be making the cut for the Fluid Minds remix album slated for a 2011 release. I’ll probably post some videos and pictures next week from our trip out there.

This will be the first time John and I will meet face to face to discuss the album and what our next move is. We’ve only been in contact, mainly, through e-mails and an occasional phone call so it’ll be nice to have a conversation about it in the same room.

Heading into the studio has got me pretty pumped about the album. I think seeing it in motion will help me figure out how I end this story. I need about 4 more tracks to feel comfortable with “The Lonely Grave..” as a completed project. I’m going to dig deep these next few weeks before the trip to NC to mellow me out for the summer – and all the projects I’m looking forward to starting.

This weekend I plan on finalizing what beats will be used for The Lonely Grave of Frank Grimes.

My last few sessions in front of the computer have been tough. Trying to find the sound, again, I had originally started with is proving to be quite difficult.

I'm no longer in that mind set. I've begun to move forward and new projects have begun to present themselves.

As excited as I am for the release of the album - i'm about ready to close the casket of Frank Grimes..

Man, this sounds like a downer as far as blogs are concerned.. but I am truly excited for this album to drop and looking forward to the weeks ahead with recording vocals with everyone.

Wednesday I caught Notebook Noise at the Double Door.. if you missed it, you suck.. it was a good show and got to hear "Swagger Jackers" and "The Good Fight" live.. shit was banging.. I was also informed that seven of my beats will be featured on Noise's next album, which is pretty exciting since I forgot about two of them and I had just sent him some new beats the other night.

I also had the chance to check two of 2Ce's new tracks this morning.. shit is SICK!!! I'm really looking forward to hearing the whole album. 2Ce is the real thing yall.. don't snooze on this.

With that being said, "The Lonely Grave of Frank Grimes" is still in the studio getting a workout. No projected release date yet. I'm hopeful it'll be released this summer.

John's hard at work with recording the vocals and additional production being laid down. Everything is sounding awesome. 2Ce, Prove and myself are all heading into the studio May 1st to get more vocals done.

And I don't want to get ahead of myself but a top secret project is in the works with 2Ce and Notebook Noise.. well, so much for top secret..

But that's another blog.

Two years and my iPhone has basically bit the dust. She was a good phone. Nah she was a great phone. But the time came for me to upgrade as a lot of my external iphone buttons had either come off or rendered useless.

Thank god for the Droid X.

It really does everything the iPhone can't. Many new applications I didn't even know exsisted. I can now blog from my phone, listen to files sent via dropbox from John, and download most things I couldn't before. Not to mention the sweet 720 HD camera this bad boy has (expect studio videos in the future)

So I say farewell iPhone and hello Droid.

The Beginning of the End

This is weird..

We’ve only begun work on “The Lonely Grave of Frank Grimes” and it feels like it’s coming to the end.

When you look at it from my perspective though, it is the end. I’ve done my part of putting the instrumentals together and harassing the emcee’s to be apart of this. The only thing left to do is record, mix and promote. I’m not saying these tasks are easy by any means. But as far as my personal creative process, I’m just about done here.

And just in time.

In about 46 days I head out to North Caroline for one full week at a beach house. Something I’ve come to look forward to every year for almost 5 years now. It’s perfect timing because the next project I plan on doing is going to be the exact opposite of “The Lonely Grave of Frank Grimes”. It is dark. The music, the lyrics and the overall idea of the album is dark. That’s exactly what I wanted to present with this album from day one.

I was talking with John Gray, who is helping me produce and record the album, about some of the tracks he’s heard so far and he told me some of it sounded “industrial”. Except for, of course, “The Good Fight”, which is the style from me he enjoys. But as I explained to him, for too long I have fought myself on two sounds: jazzy and upbeat vs. dark and programmed. I’ve tried to fit both styles on one album and the outcome has always been a disaster. The only time we were successful with that formula was “AlteredStatus”. But then again, there were more heads involved in the process so we were able to get those feelings across much better than I ever could solo.

“The Lonely Grave...” will represent one part of Asa Phelps: the dark, brooding and unhappy monster that lives inside. Once this album is released I can put that monster to rest... for a little while at least.

8 days in North Carolina and summer in Chicago will more than likely help fuel most, if not all, of my next adventure in sound.

Until then, back into the shadows I go..

Wage War

Shortly before giving life back to this blog, I ran into what every artist inevitably faces: writer’s block.

How awful.

For a few solid weeks I was unable to come up with any new material. And I don’t just mean any new songs that I thought would be good mind you. I mean nothing. Zilch. Zero. Nada.

I am happy to report though, that as of last night I have broken the block and created something pretty rad. The new instrumental is titled “Wage War”. It’s probably one of the most banging beats I’ve done in a long time and look forward to it finding its place on “The Lonely Grave of Frank Grimes”. I’ve already spoke with an old friend about getting down on the track. Its right up his alley – and it’s been too long since we last worked together.

Also, during the recording process of “The Lonely Grave..” there will be (and already exist) some tracks that won’t make the cut. I plan on doing something else with them in a form of a digital EP or something along those lines.

Expect to see that before “The Lonely Grave of Frank Grimes”

The Smell of Burnt Toast

It’s funny to me to look at what music you listen to when trying to get inspired. I used to only listen to hiphop when I wanted to be inspired to make hiphop music. Same goes for when I used to make “dance” type music. I found myself listening to a lot of MOBY, Chemical Brothers and Fatboy Slim. That inevitably left me feeling uninspired. When I decided what I wanted to do with this album I decided to take a different approach.

Everyday I listen to Pandora radio, while sitting at my desk, clicking through a plethora of different stations. The experience ranges from Johnny Cash to Mozart to DJ Shadow to John Coltrane to CCR to The Zombies to New Order to A Perfect Circle. Every little melody my subconscious takes in throughout the day has definitely come out in some form or another while I’ve been creating music for “The Lonely Grave of Frank Grimes”. And it has been for the better. My approach to writing has been nothing like I’ve ever done before.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’ve still been listening to a lot of hiphop during the writing process as well. Actually I’ve expanded what I listen to. I’ve tapped a bit more into the mainstream. Lil Wayne, Drake, Kid Cudi and even taking it back to old 2-Pac, Tribe Called Quest, BDP, The Pharcyde and old Jay-Z. All have had some sort of impact on what I’ve been doing with this album. I’m already looking forward to whatever project I take on next.. but that’s getting ahead of myself.

Asa Phelps - The Good Fight

The song is called “The Good Fight” and features Notebook Noise and John Gray. When I asked Notebook if he wanted to jump on the album I sent him a couple of beats that were a bit “too dark” for him. He had asked me for something a little more upbeat and this is what I gave him. John laid down the chorus and bass line for the track after Noise recorded his vocals. I got the mix down the next day and listened to it on my headphones in the bathroom at work. I was pretty blown away with what these two had done to such a simple instrumental I put together for them. It’s pretty dope and I’m glad to say it’s the first official release from the album. Expect tracks like this and more from “The Lonely Grave..”

It’s been quite a long time since I sat down and wrote something here. I guess that makes sense.. I haven’t really had much to sit down and write about. I’ve really only worked on and released one EP, a few singels and a bunch of remixes in the past 2 or 3 years. The last time I had an official full length album was “By The Time I Get Back” which I released back in 08.. my how much has changed..

I’m currently working on my first full length since 2008’s embarrassing “By The Time I Get Back”.. the title of the new album is “The Lonely Grave of Frank Grimes”.. it will be featuring some notable Chicago emcee’s such as 2Ce, Notebook Noise, Ptugz and more.. Right now all we have are some instrumentals, demos recorded and one single that has leaked onto the interweb.. I’m about to begin working with John Gray at Melody Sunrise Studio for the mixing and furthering the production of the tracks. I’m looking forward to working with everyone on this project and can’t wait to finally present something I’m truly proud of.

I’ll be posting updates for the album here and leave Facebook and Twitter for my randomness. Expect a once a week type deal here.

So let’s not count this as the first post in regards to the album.. I’ll get that up later this week..

For those of you who have been listening to my podcast for the past couple months; here's an official message from MyPodcast.com on the site being down for an extended amount of time:

This also destroyed all episodes' titles and descriptions. The good news is that the audio files of all podcasts are completely intact, but we will now have to re-associate these episodes with their podcasts and rebuild all of the pages from backup data. We are working tirelessly on trying to get all this accomplished in as little time as possible. As soon as I have a more concrete timeframe to pass along to you all I will. Since Tuesday (03/11/2009) mypodcast.com has been updating their servers. Unfortunately nothing has changed since then so I have been unable to post the latest podcast.

Luckily, we are recording the Mother Brain Productions interviews this weekend and will be posting brand new episodes throughout March and April. So with that being said, this past weeks podcast will be posted this following Tuesday (St. Patrick's day) to help buy me some time to get the MB shows ready... and believe you me, these shows are going to be fantastic and well worth the wait!!

Other than the podcast news, Prew and I have begun work on his EP due out late April. We are revisiting older tracks and adding a brand new feel to them. I think you will be pleasantly surprised with the outcome.

Joe, Mike, Paul the Demon and myself have begun writing new material. You may remember the four of us as "Maurice" however, we have turned a new leaf and plan on embarking on something completely different from what you may know. Stay tuned for the goods!!

"When It's All Said and Done" is still in the works. I want this album to reflect more of me than "By The Time I Get Back" did. Not to say it was a bad album, but I just feel as if I haven't really put my best foot forward.

Regardless, all tunes will be worth the wait and this year is the year we take this shit to the next level.

Prew has begun work on his first full length album. We've recorded one track and have begun weeding out the beats that will or will not appear on the album. We're also working on a short EP of some classic Prew tracks that will be out some time in the very near future. More info on that very, very soon...

What it is!?

Things in the basement have been both better and worse so far for 2009. The 9-5 has cut some of my hours, I owe on some car insurance BS and the weather is cold as hell.

On the positive tip however, "Me & Amigo: 2001-2008" is set to be released on January 20th, 2009. It's a collection of tracks I had produced or had written completely between the years of 2001-2008.

With that being said, a popular name you'll see featured on the release is none other than Chicago's own Prewlific.

I've known this cat since grade school and made one of my hottest joints ever with him. He and I just finished a session this evening and we are in talks of working together on his first solo release. Granted nothing's been set in stone, it's nice to be working with a long time friend again. You can catch him on a couple of tracks on "Me & Amigo.."

Me & Amigo: 2001-2008 01/20/2009

First off, Happy New Year! I hope 2009 is going to be better than 2008 was for everyone.

With that being said, my new (old shit) release "Me & Amigo: 2001-2008" will be available on January 20th, 2009. It will be a digital download released through my MySpace page. I'll have link posted that will get you the zip file containing all 10 tracks and art work. I'm going to make some handmade CD's for any upcoming shows or if you are interested in a handmade copy, hit me up and I'll get one to you.

I'm still working on "When It's All Said & Done". With the new year here I figure it's best to get back to work before another year slips on past me.

Some tweaking still needs to be overseen and completed by John Gray and myself for the Notebook Noise remixes I worked on this past fall. We're all hoping to get that shit out soon.

Also, former "Maurice" band mates and I have begun to work on new songs as well as fine tuning some oldies to get back out and play some shows in the near future. No official word yet, but expect some news in the near future.

So remember, "Me & Amigo: 2001-2008" drops Tuesday January 20th. "When It's All Said & Done" is set for a mid/late 2009 release. The Notebook Noise remixes should be available soon and "Maurice" (or whatever we're going by) is getting the live shit back together.

It has been over 3 months since I last posted anything here.And with good reason...
I needed a break.

I began work on "By The Time I Get Back" at the end of 2006 and did not stop working until late this year. I released BTTIGB earlier this year and began working on my next album. When I wasn't working on those projects I was working on AlteredStatus tracks,playing drums in Maurice before we took a year break and was tapped to do some remixes for Notebook Noise and Fluid Minds as well.

After I finished up the last Notebook Noise remix, I started slowing down on how much I would work on music... you know, get some fresh air into the brain instead of 24/7 song writing.

I caught up on some movie watching, book reading and nap taking sessions. I also got sick, recovered. Grams got sick, getting better. Dad went to the ER, he's starting to recover. A lot going on even in my off time.

I also got the chance to dig through some old tracks I had done some time around 2004 for a self-produced mix tape "Vitamins for the Soul". Once I found these gems, I started feeling the fire in my stomach to get back to work. I was inspired again.

So.. here's the latest.

AlteredStatus has gone back on hiatus. We are still looking to get the album finished some time in the near future. Right now everyone's schedules are crazy and we just don't have the time to get together. However, I have been working with everyone on the solo tip and we'll still be putting out some tracks and making our way out to some shows next year.

Maurice is alive? Maybe, maybe not. This past Friday, the four original members of Chicago's very own Maurice came together for the first time in over 2 years. Joe, Mike, Paul and myself all sat down and played for a good chunk of the evening into Saturday morning. There are talks of getting back together to play some open mics early 2009. Nothing is official yet, but can say it's almost grunted you will be seeing Maurice a lot next year.

"When It's All Said & Done" is coming together slowly but surely.I've recently laid down some new tracks and know I'm finally on the path to finish the album.

"Me & Amigo" is more of a "Look what I've done!" release. It's a collection of tracks I've produced, recorded, wrote and/or preformed spanning from 2001 to 2008. You'll catch some AlteredStatus tracks as well as some Cidelement tracks. That will be available before the end of the year. Most likely free downloads or a download in mix tape fashion.

Well, it's 1:57am (Friday morning). I'm still having trouble sleeping these days. Not sure if it's stress, anxiousness or just plain old insomnia. Either way, I'm not in bed right now.

Since I have the time I figured I'd update yall with the latest..

My friends Fluid Minds have been working with Chicago poet/emcee Notebook Noise for some time now and the fruits of their labors have been released. Notebooks Noise's new full length CD "Snares, Hooks and Rhyme Books" is now available. If you haven't heard it yet, check out some of the tracks on his MySpace page.

Upon the release of his disc, I've been asked to remix the track "If I Fall" for a future EP.

I'm really looking forward to working on this track. It's going to be a challenge for me since I've never done an official remix for an artist.

AlteredStatus will be getting together next week to begin work on our new live set. It's been a minute since we've graced the stage so we're going to approach it with a different state of mind. We'll bumping the old shit as well as dropping some new joints for the first time ever.

"When It's All Said and Done" is still on the back burner for the time being. I'm mainly focused on finishing up some lyrics and mixing down finished tracks. Hopefully it will be out by the end of this year, but it's starting to look like a 2009 release. Once I get back to work I'll be posting new tracks on my page for yall to check out.

We're baaaaaack!!

After taking a couples months off to work on other projects and get our personal shit together, Poppa Justify, the Blvr, Paul the Demon and myself have come back together to bring you AlteredStatus.

So far the only confirmed date we have is October 1st @ The Tonic Room. It will be our first show together since our show at Betty's Blue Star Lounge earlier this year.

We have begun work on our new live set and have begun discussing what exactly we will be recording for our first official release (before the end of 2008, yall see something from us).

Since AlteredStatus has taken priority in the lab, I'm going to take some time off from working on "When It's All Said and Done". I need to change shit up so I can re-approach the album with a different state of mind and bring out the best.

One week from today I will be releasing "The Spring Effect" EP. The 5 songs EP contains tracks from my forth coming album "When It's All Said & Done", due out later this year. I'm pretty pleased with the outcome of the EP. Two of the songs have already been posted on my page in the past ('SLCC' & 'The Spring Effect') and I have received some pretty good feedback so I am pumped to see what everyone else has to say. In addition to releasing the EP, I will also be re-releasing "By The Time I Get Back" and "The Nine Inch Nails Remixes Volume 1" on the same web page. Not only will all three releases be available for free, but the second volume of my Nine Inch Nails remixes will also be available! In total, you could end up with 26 songs from yours truly - ALL FOR FREE!!

In other news, Paul and I have begun work on series of songs for a new project we've been developing for quite some time now. Nothing official has been announced in regards to a release, but expect something completely different from anything the two of us have done in the past. We aren't limiting ourselves to any one genre or sound, instead we are pushing our creative boundries to the limit and we'll just have to see where it takes us. Expect a song or two to surface sometime late this summer. Hopefully we'll be on stage with these songs some time late fall 2008.

AlteredStatus has been asked to play the Tonic Room in Chicago with Phillip Morris and others. We will have all the information at the end of this week.

It's almost been a month since I've last posted anything here. In that time I began working on "When It's All Said and Done" without really realizing it. These new songs should have been for "The 23rd Hour", however they don't really fit the criteria for said concept EP. I feel real good about these tracks. So good I'm pushing back the release of "The 23rd Hour" to continue work on my second full length album. I feel the songs I've been working on so far have been some of my best songs yet.

For the first time I'll be recording these songs with other musicians either accompanying the music or replacing parts that I've recorded with live instruments. Not sure about any vocals yet. I'm writing for one right now and if I decide to have more, I'll be adding more people to the project.

I don't have a release date for "When It's All Said and Done", but I am in talks with my friend Rich at The Magic Spot Productions about putting it out on CD.

I'm looking at a Fall/Winter release.

I'll be posting a digital EP, "The Spring Effect/Return To The Gallows", for free in place of "The 23rd Hour" on July 29, 2008. All information will be posted here soon.

OK, hope this post made sense.. I was writing and packing at the same time.. oh yea, I'm moving back to my old place (our practice spot) this weekend...

If you don't know already, I've released my Nine Inch Nails remixes EP on MySpace this past Tuesday and its available via MP3 for free!

I've also included an El-P remix as a bonus remix for the six slot on my player.

Anyway, thought I'd take the time to break down the remixes I did and why I selected these songs in particular.

"Me I'm Not" (Year Zero)
This was the first song that I heard from "Year Zero" and it was leaked onto the Internet. I fell in love with it. Very different for Nine Inch Nails while still keeping in traditional fashion.

The remix took away all original parts from the song except for the vocals and one synth. The rest I built, wrote and looped for the track. It's a different approach from the dark and moody original. I took the up beat path with a touch of a sappy 80's pop feel.. i think.

It was also the first Nine Inch Nails remix I completed.

"Lights In The Sky" (The Slip)
My personal favorite remix and track from "The Slip". I stripped the track down to vocals and piano. Added drums and some minor effects.

I have a deep connection and attachment with this mix as I created it in a very foreign mindset (no, not drug induced) and it etched in my mind forever.

"The Good Soldier" (Year Zero)
The heaviest and most decorated remix I've ever completed. By decorated I'm referring to the new techniques and perspectives I took and made in the process of finishing this mix. I'm very pleased with it and the instrumental version will be on "The 23rd Hour" EP.

"Flyentology/The Four of Are Dying" (El-P - I'll Sleep When You're Dead/NIN - The Slip)

This track is technically NOT a Nine Inch Nails remix. However...
Trent Reznor is featured on "Flyentology" and I had wanted to remix it since I heard the two were working together. When I heard "The Four of us.." I instantly heard El-P "I know I haven't been walking a humble path..." and knew it would work. Sure enough, all parts of "TFUD" synced with "Flyentology"... almost too perfect...

"13 Ghosts II" (Last Look)(Ghosts I-IV)
Beautiful. That is all you can say about the melody of this one. I take no credit for the music. All I did was strip things away and add some effects. You can make perfect better.. can you?

Since all I did was mix this one, I grabbed and quick edited a video and "Last Look" was the soundtrack.

BONUS TRACK
The League of Extraordinary Nobodies (El-P - I'll Sleep When You're Dead")
This song is about cocaine and it seems to have reached a peak of popularity the more places I go these days. Take this one in over Just Blaze's instrumental for Jay Z's "December 4th".

Wow... being unemployed is oddly calming... for the first time in, oh, 7 months or so, I feel great! "The 23rd Hour" - My concept EP featuring tracks I would use if I ever make a horror movie... basically..

"When It's All Said and Done" - I guess you can call this the official follow up to "By The Time...". As of right now I do not have a projected release date. I'm also in talks with other artists to step in and lend their talents to what I think, will be my best work ever. I'll be posting some demos later this summer after the release of "The 23rd Hour".

It's been about a month since the release of "By The Time I Get Back" and I owe a lot of thanks to all of yall that have shown me love for the album. I'm glad you enjoy it and it's only the beginning.

Since the release, the Korg's power supply fried and I still need to get some tracks off my old HD to begin recording the AlteredStatus CD.

While in limbo I've begun work on a concept EP. It will be titled "The 23rd Hour". It's basically my musical tribute to horror films. Yes, I know, I'm a big nerd and why would anyone do that? The answer is simple: Because I can!

"The 23rd Hour" will contain seven new tracks and will have their own theme.

It will be available July 29th 2008. Not sure how it will be released. I'm thinking about doing a short CD run or possibly doing what I did with BTGB by putting up on the Internet for free. I have some Nine Inch Nails remixes that I wanted to put up for download as well. I might just make it a double release.

Smooth Like Cream Cheese

First off, thank you everyone that has shown love for my album "By The Time I Get Back". I got a lot more responses for these songs as opposed to anything else I’ve posted. You have all made the effort worth it and I thank you all...

The response prompted me to begin work on new tracks. Last Friday I began work on a new song and finished it up today. Probably the quickest I’ve ever finished a track other than "To The Gallows". In my opinion, the song "SLCC" (it stands for ’Smooth Like Cream Cheese’) shows real growth since I completed "By The Time...". It’s a new style and definitely a new approach to making music for me. I wanted to make something that had some real structure while still going off on random tangents with the beat. This track embodies it all. Not sure where it will end up as far as releases go. Maybe this is the beginning of the next project I start. Maybe it’s just a random track meant only for my page. Whatever it may be, it has a special place in my heart.

I am very pleased to announce that today, April 1st, 2008, my first solo effort is available!!

It's been a long journey and I am extremely excited and proud of this album. I hope you all enjoy these songs as much as I do.

The whole idea of making my own album really came full circle late last year after an AlteredStatus show near the southside of Chicago.

We had been working on some new tracks for the show and I had a handfull of instrumentals that really didn't fit our sound. In all fairness to the music, these tracks deserved a place in the "Asa Phelps book of accomplishments".

So for the next 2 to 3 months I spent time with each track and revisted some older beats I had begun work on and created "By The Time I Get Back". About 60% of the tracks were made with a Korg Elektribe beat machine (and various samples from records) and the other 40% were created from scratch by taking kicks, snares, hi-hats, piano notes, bass notes, guitar riffs and what have you, and piecing them all together as if they were originally composed and recorded together.

During the writing process, I began to play some of the tracks done with the Korg for fellow musicians and we began to try some different things with them. As much as I wanted to record these versions for the album, I just couldn't get the time to do so. So I was faced with pushing the release back or sticking to my guns (finally) and going with what I have.

I stuck to my guns and "By The Time I Get Back" was complete.

I had origianlly planned to setup a web page for free download but couldn't find the right place to do so. Instead I have setup 2 seperate MySpace pages for people to download the songs and artwork for free.

I have also uploaded the album on my MySpace page for purchase if you would feel so inclinded to pay for the tracks (hint, hint)... but no worries, we all download shit for free. All I ask is you share my music with other people. Whether it's making them a CD of one or all the songs, put one of my songs on your page, put me in your top friends or simply word of mouth, the more people that check out, the farther my music will go.

Well folks, the clock has almost run out...

"By The Time I Get Back" is 98.9% complete. A little fine tuning with the mixdowns and getting the pages ready for download is really that is left.

This has been quite the undertaking, but it's been worth it.

With the release date of my first solo effort only one week away, I'm currently in panic-over analyzing-rework-freak out mode.

It's all for the best though... I really think a lot of people are going to find something on here they can really enjoy and even better, play the song more than once!
As I write this I'm setting up a site to download the album in its entirety, including art work, FOR FREE!! Since pressing the CD takes time and money, I've decided to go the free route for right now until I get the actual CD pressed. Or if you are one of the many people out there that love supporting the DIY musician, you can get the tracks on my myspace page for 99cents a piece.

The artwork is just about done. I have couple more things to do with it before I deem it a "finish product".

By The Time I Get Back

The Long Hard Road...

04-01-08 is still the set date for “By the Time I Get Back”. Progress has been slow, but steady overall. I’m positive that I will be able to complete the album, the way I want to present it, by that day. As far as CD packaging and all that hoopla, we’ll have to wait until the summer to see that. A separate webpage will be setup for the album where you can download a zip file that contains all the tracks as well as the artwork. Once I have the CD pressed and packaged, it will be available on my MySpace page for $10 via PayPal. By that time I hope to include some extra goodies for those that purchased it instead of downloading for free, which I don’t mind either. Like Cage said, “I got a million plus downloads fuck a plaque”.

Anyway, I’m really excited and looking forward to spending some serious time in my “lab” completing this album. It’s been a long time since I’ve officially released a full length album on my own. I’m not sure what to do with it yet as far as distribution. I may try and do it myself with NDigenous Records, or being to reach out to some friends that know more about that shit. Expect more updates as we get closer to April 1st.

AlteredStatus is in talks with Fluid Minds singer/guitarist/pianist John Gray to record our first full length CD. More details to follow.

AlteredStatus back in effect!!

Our last show was great (with Fluid Minds & Phillip Morris @ Reggies)! It was so great we decided to take some time to recoup and begin working on some behind the scenes things.

I've been working on my solo effort as well as other projects with the likes of JB (Begotten), Paul The Demon (AlteredStatus) and began working on a movie(!) with long time friend and musician Joe Laxner (aka Mojo Risin, Flip-flop, Bogus Jones, etc) of Maurice and "It's Radio Man Fame".

The Blvr has begun work on a couple of solo tracks, although nothing has been set for a release, as well as booking for The Funky Buddha Lounge's Thursday night showcase, every last Thursday of the month and reaching a higher ground through education (college daze suckas!!)

Poppa Justify has been working with some random cats as well getting some new beats together for future projects. He's also been spending some time in kitchen for his day job- CHEF!

Paul the Demon has been traveling as well as jamming with some new musicans, and working on some side projects with me.

With all that set in motion, we felt it was time to get back on stage. Thanks to our good friend DJ Demchuck, we are booked for this Wednesday (02/27/08) at Betty's Blue Star Lounge in Chicago, as the openers for their weekly showcase. It should be a good time and if you couldn't make it out for our last show, we'll be playing some of the new tracks we did that night.

Sat down with the Korg for the first time in about 3 weeks (it had been at the AlteredStatus practice space since the last show)… revisited some of the early demos and began working my way through them again. A few tracks I had originally thought would never see the light of day got a make over and have reached their full potential. I’m really excited to get these recorded and head into the studio to mix them down and lay down an necessary vocals.

AlteredStatus has pretty much been on hiatus since the show in December. Most of us are taking some time off to get other things done before we begin work on the album and move on to the next phase of AlteredStatus… expect a lot from us this year.

Just wanted to drop a line to yall… it’s been a minute since I’ve posted so here we go…

“I’m On My Way” EP will be available Tuesday, March 25th 2008 only for digital download from my “myspace” page. Not sure if I’m going to sell it track by track or as one full download for a set price. I’ll have more info in the coming weeks as the EP is finalized. The demo process has been long and grueling, but overall, the songs for the EP have come along real nice-like. I’m going to attempt to lay down some of the vocal tracks next week and take it from there… until the end.

In other works, JB (of Begotten) and I will begin work on our new project “Angry Red Planet” these next couple of weeks. We are really excited about this project as he and I haven’t worked together since we recorded “Misleading Trust” back in 2005. We are going to approach this project with an open mind. JB is phenomenal musician that will be bringing a lot to the table and I will be bringing my regular ol’ programming-synthesizing self to the table. The world may never be the same…

The Blvr will begin work on a solo project I can’t say too much about right now… other than he’s tapped me for a beat or two… I’ll keep you posted on that as well…

AlteredStatus has yet to begin the recording process of the album due to scheduling conflicts and what-not’s, but we plan on finishing it up soon so we can move on to the next chapter of AS.

It's been almost a month since I last posted on here... needless to say I've been busy..

The AlteredStatus show, with Fluid Minds (their AS Mixtape CD release) and Phillip Morris, was a great one to say the least! Although I forgot to run one song during the set (sorry Mik), it all came together real nice. We got a lot of great feedback from random folks out there for the other artists (or they were there just chillin) and Reggie's treated us to some free drinks and a free meal.

As of right now, there are no more shows booked for 2007. But we plan on getting back to it early 08 with the release of the full length CD. We are about to get working on the that shit again and hope to have an early 08 release before spring.

"By The Time I Get Back" is looking to be released some time in February or March (if I stay on my shit!!!!). I've taken some time away from the songs I had originally had set for the CD to see if they were really what I wanted to put out. I'm going to take some time in the coming days to go over them again and see what should stay or what should go - if anything.

Paul the Demon (from AlteredStatus) and I have begun work on a couple of new songs and we plan continuing with that momentum to release something completely different my own work or AlteredStatus... it's going to be quite the project.

Speaking of other projects, JB (of Begotten) and I will begin working on our own CD. We are going about it the only way we know: laydown some tracks, do some quick mixes and lay down vocals all in the same session (or two). We hope to have it done early 2008, but don't plan on rushing anything. If all goes well, we plan on moving forward with the idea and taking it on as a full project with shows and a full length release. Only time will tell.

I've relaunched NDigenous Records after a brief stint of some hiatus action - or non-action if you will... I'm going to take the bull by the horns here and really get this machine going...

I've known a lot of great artists for so long and I really believe they need to be heard - and that's what NDigenous is all about.

Last night at the AlteredStatus practice, our friend Liz came through and took some phenomenal shots of us while practicing the set for the upcoming show @ Reggies in Chicago. The picture attached to this blog is something Liz threw together for us and that shit is TIGHT!!! I don't think we could've asked for anything better.

Speaking of AS, we've been working more and more with our new drummer Lucius and the set is coming along nicely. We are going to see if we can pull it together for the December show. If not, Lucius will be on stage with us from here on out! Get ready for the mother fucking RAWKUS!!!

I've been steadily working on my Nine Inch Nails remixes (from YearZero). So far I have two tracks done and have begun work on 2 more. Hopefuly I'll have the whole album remixed come Christmas time so I can give it to all of you for FREE!!

"By The Time I Get Back" is back on track. I began work on a couple more songs with the new Acid pro I grabbed and let me tell you - I have officialy unleashed some sort of beast (and I mean that in the best way possible) and I only see things getting better. I'm trying to get the "I'm On My Way" EP done before the years end. I've posted the original track listing before, but I have decided to switch some things up. I'll elaborate more later.

Hello all...

I know the posts have been more few and far between, but with good reason: sessions in the lab.

I've been working on getting everything set with the new setup before any more work on "By The Time I Get Back" resumes (although I have started 3 new songs since the fatal crash of my original computer). Systems are almost a-go! Got some new software and whatnots arriving soon to help out the process. I'm planning on resuming work on the album some time early next week. I got a lot of new ideas that will fit well with what I've been working on so far - so we shall see how that transpires.

With my other free time, I've been working on some Nine Inch Nails remixes for the past 2 weeks actually. Trent Reznor's last album, "Year Zero" was very intense and very new for Nine Inch Nails. With that being said, the remix album is about to drop and it comes with a DVD the contains all the parts of each song for tracking; let the remixing begin.

AlteredStatus has welcomed a new member to the band recently: Lucius. He's the official drummer for AlteredStatus and we are pretty pumped for how things have been going so far. Once we get done with the CD, we are going to take things to the next level and really bring the party/serious shit back to the game. Expect great things.

Also, be sure to come out on Saturday December 15th when we rock Reggies (with our new drummer Lucius) with Phillip Morris and Fluid Minds. We've been practiciing in the same spot as Fluid Minds but haven't had the chance to hear them yet (this is in regards to the change of thier set from previous songs to their [AS] Mix tape set), but from what I've been told, that shit sounds tight!

So there it is - the latest from my side of the world.

Now that the lab is up and running again, work on "By The Time I Get Back" has resumed. Went over the tracks I had first plotted out for the CD and still happy. I began work on new track... I guess you can say it's more along the lines of some dance-type hiphop shit... not sure what's going to come of the track, but expect to see it on my page very soon.

I plan on releasing the "I'm On My Way" EP next month (if all goes well with the new setup in the studio) in digital format off of my MySpace page. Still haven't decided on the track listing yet, but expect about 5-6 songs. Since "Sara Lives on the Other Side of Beat Down Park" never really took off (due to it not being fully pressed) I've decided to take some tracks from it and throw it either on the EP or the full length... hell, it probably be both.

AlteredStatus has been working on the set for the December 15th show with Fluid Minds and Phillip Morris. If there is one show you should head out and see in December, it will be this show. Fluid Minds will be debuting the live versions of their "AS mix tape". Phillip Morris, if you don't know already, is a dope/sickass eMCee from Chicago. We had the pleasure to play a show with him during the summer and that shit was off the hook.

Other than running through the set, we will being to record the self-titled AlteredStatus album for a late December (maybe early January 08) release. We start work in the new studio this month. Once that is complete, we'll have a CD release show and a few others to follow. From there we begin to incorporate our new drummer Lucius and other musicians we've been practicing with during the year for the live band shit. New songs, new year, new AlteredStatus.

Ok, I think I've covered everything (sorry, it's been a minute since I've given a solid update) so off to bed I go.

Alright kiddies, the new computer is up and running and let me tell you, I don’t think I’ll be leaving the lab anytime soon. This shit is tight, runs smooth and the screen is crystal clear… very nice! Getting new studio software very soon to start multi-tracking recording… also, DVD burning capabilities have finally been implemented – so expect some bonus shit with the AlteredStatus CD once it’s complete.

We’re still working on our set for the December 15th show with Fluid Minds (their “[AS] Mix tape” CD release) and so far, it’s coming together nicely.

“By The Time I Get Back” has been on the back burner for most of October, but with the new computer in place and new software making its way onto it; expect some more updates and demos soon.

The picture above is a throw back from 200-something… it was the first show I did with The Magic Spot Productions “Handsome Fellows”. We played at the Fireside Bowl… I believe we opened up for some punk band, but we weren’t even on the stage – we played next to the Neo-Geo arcade machine in front of the bathrooms… big day!

Saturday night was fucking sweet. Plain and simple. Fluid Minds kicked off the night with a slamming set that really got the party jumping in the basement. Most of the people out by the kegs were only out there for refills, while must of us partied in the downstairs.

After FM, another band followed with what sounded like a sweet set of rock tunes (I was outside catching a smoke and a refill)… right after, The Blvr, Paul the Demon and I took to the stage (carpet) doing a quick improvised set featuring “All Day In The Basement”, “Everything Is Gonna Be Alright” and “Chi-oytee” (a brand new track we’ve been working on). Everyone really seemed to dig it as the same people stuck around for each band that night. We got down with some other cats on some freestyle sessions and then we called it a night.

Hopefully this is a look into the future for the Fluid Minds/AlteredStatus show in December. We’ll have the full info and flier in the coming weeks.

As for the AlteredStatus CD… more info REAL soon…

Rain delay?

Unfortunately AlteredStatus will not be playing the Hall of Horrors show tonight in ..Elwood Park, IL. The news came to us late last night; Poppa Justify won't be able to make it out to the show until much later and the organizers of the show won't budge on who is playing what time slot.

So with that, we had to make the decision to either play a half ass set with only 3 of us, or bite the bullet and not play the show. We chose the not to play at all instead of playing a bad show.

We apologize for anyone who was looking to make it out there tonight. Begotten, The Heard and DJ Demchuk w/ Erik Lab Rat will still be performing and the cost is still $10.

I'm sure the show will start some time around 8:30pm with Begotten playing first.

In other news, we will be playing the TROY HOUSE Halloween party. DJ's and other bands will be playing that night as well. There is no set time for any band, but there is free beer and booze so you don't have much to lose if you just show up.

The inevitable happened last night. “The Simple machine”, my computer I’ve been working on for the past 4 years, has bit the dust. (No pun intended, as it was coated with old dust on the inside). So many landmarks of my music have been created with that machine. My first solo efforts, “This Was My Mistake”, “Sara Lives on the Other Side of Beat down Park” were all recorded with the beast. The NDigenous Records compilation “Vitamins For The Soul” was also recorded on it – as well as many “Maurice” tracks and the long gone “It’s Radio Man” show hosted by myself and Mojo Risin’. Every flyer for any show we’ve done in the past 4 years was created with that machine.

Ahh… it shall be missed…

On that note – I should have the new computer installed and running some time early next week.

“The Hall of Horrors” show is a little under 2 weeks away. We, AlteredStatus, have been working on the new set and everything is going good. Tonight Poppa Justify and the B-leaver will be working on their shit for the show while I try and touch up some of the beats to make sure all shit is tight… the Demon is traveling on business, he’ll be back next week for the final run before the show, no worries there. We’ll also be laying down some tracks to have a CD on hand for the show as well. If that doesn’t work out, we’ll have copies of the old “Adventures of Captain Mauser” EP.

The “I’m On My Way” EP will be ready come show time. So far its looking like 5 tracks from “By The Time I Get Back” will be on it:

Last night, Poppa Justify, The B-Leaver, Paul the Demon and yours truly got together and work on the set. This is the first time we’ve ran through all the songs since our show back in April. And to no surprise, everything was on point, even with the new shit (which we are opening with).

Expect some other treats like some old Mordecai tracks, possibly an old Cidelement track and a brand new track from my CD “By The Time I Get Back”. All of this in preparation for the big show October 26th in Chicago. Not sure when we are going on, but I have been told that I’ll know soon – and as usual, as soon as I know, you will know.

In case you haven’t heard, or seen the multiple MySpace bulletins, AlteredStatus will be playing a show October 26th, 2007. We’ll be joining Begotten and DJ Demchuck with Eric Lab Rat on the stage that evening. From what I’m being told, the VFW hall will be transformed into a Halls of Horrors type of thing. It should be cool – a lot of people are working on getting everything together.

Hopefully I got the final specs in on time for the shirts… not sure if we’re going to be selling them or giving em’ out at the show yet – but know there will be some free shirts given out at some point during the evening.

We’re either going to have some sort of mix tape or 4 song EP on hand at the show. I’ll keep you posted on that noise…

Paul the Demon and I will be spot lit some times during the set as we attempt to jam on some new instrumental tracks we have/will been/be working on. Also, I’ll be performing the title track from “By The Time I Get Back” that evening as well… I’m going to try and have an EP of that work on hand, but AS is priority.

I got word that Begotten will be doing some bitchin’ covers – and Demchuck Eric the Lab Rat are sure to keep you moving all night long…

It's a Halloween show yall... and it's going to get crazy. Not only are these awesome bands playing, but there will be a costume contest as well. It's an all ages event (21+ with ID can drink).

I'll have all the details later today (address, start time and addmission)...

So don't make any plans, except to come out to this show that night... just think, the following Saturday you can spend getting dressed up and drunk at a house party... so why not just come out to a REAL party the Friday before.

So it seems like I’ve been going to shows left and right all year long. And I have my special lady Kaori to thank. Monday night was The Chemical Brothers @ The Rivera Theater in Chicago (if you’re ever in Chicago, be sure to catch a show there) and tonight is the special Gala event with none other than The Beastie Boys at The Riv as well. They are doing an all instrumental set tonight and should be dope!!

I’ve found myself studying all the bands and artists I’ve seen lately for a couple of reasons. Stage presence, sound quality translation from disc to the stage and fluidity of the sets they all play. Sometimes Kaori will turn, look at me and ask “Everything Ok?”. Of course everything is ok other than the perplexed look on my face due to the studying and conversations I am holding with myself in my head. Good thing she’s a dope chick that doesn’t take that shit personally. Shows have always been more than going out and having a good time for me. (Don’t get me wrong, I’m all about going out and having a kick-ass time at concert with my friends). However, it’s always been like going to lecture from some professor I’m really interested in. It’s all learning process for me. And I tend to take everything in with great results reflected in my own actions.

“By The Time I Get Back” has been the steadiest and most solid project I’ve ever worked on. It’s nice (most of the time) when you get to make all the moves and call all the shots whenever you deem necessary. I went back and reviewed tracks I started this album with and it seems I still have a long way to go. I currently have 23 songs slated for this CD – obviously some songs won’t make the cut. The hard part is choosing which songs won’t make it since they have all been apart of this process, “By The Time I Get Back”.

Tomorrow night I leave for Mississippi to spend time with Kaori’s family and meet up with an old friend that helped me open my eyes and ears to underground hiphop. Then it’s off to New Orleans Monday and back to Chicago the same night for the first AlteredStatus practice with our new set.

I’ll be back online next Tuesday with an update on everything…

It’s been a crazy week (actually, more than a week)… started working out some of the kinks for “I’m On My Way”… the lyrics are just about done and I’ve decided to incorporate some live drums at one point in the song. Paul the demon and I will begin working on some other tracks (“SeedKast” and “I’m On My Way”) soon as well as some new songs we started fucking around with Monday night. I’m trying to get some more work done this week, but time is running out… and not much free time to work on the album this week (or weekend)…

As far as AlteredStatus, we worked on our new set list and figured we have about 11 songs to play. 5 solid, 6 shaky. Not bad since we’ve really only played one show all together on stage. It should be sweet. We are finally going to start recording the CD… shits going to get crazy real soon, real fast…

Holy shit. Last night I had the opportunity to see one of my all time favorite emcees and one of my all time favorite producers. Aesop Rock. Blockhead.

Shit was insane. I made it just in time to catch the end of Blockheads set - after a long bus trip with Kaori and John Jameson. Following Blockhead was one of the more interesting bands I’ve seen in awhile: The Octopus Project. It was their first show on the “None Shall Pass Tour” and they were pretty dope. It’s hard to explain their sound so if you get a chance, look em’ up.

Then the big moment came – DJ Big Whiz came out followed by Aesop Rock and Rob Sonic (who I think is going to be the next big thing for DefJux). One song after the other, everyone was really getting into it. Surprisingly Rob Sonic did four of his own tracks and the crowds reaction was ecstatic.

Aes played some of my favs off the new album, plus some tracks of off “Fast Cars, Danger, Fire and Knives”. One of the highlights was the very last song: “Daylight”. It was rumored that he’d no longer play it at shows anymore.

Guess that wasn’t the case last night.

I can’t give out too much info yet, as nothing is completely confirmed, but a big show for the end of October is currently in the works. And when I say big, I mean BIG!! AlteredStatus has been asked to play, as well as Maurice and Begotten… there are about 4 or 5 other bands slated to join us on stage…

I wish I could say more about who is being asked to play the show, but since no one has confirmed yet – no more can be said… I’ll keep you updated as soon as the information becomes available… you WILL want to be there.

Tuesday night, AlteredStatus got together to try and work out our new live band set. As much as shit was bangin’, we decided that until the album is complete, we’re going to hold off on working on the live set. We’ll still be playing shows until the release of the CD, just not with the live band.

Poppa Justify and Blvr and currently working on a new track (an instrumental I created titled “Hardcore”). From what I’ve already heard of the lyrics, this track is going to be sick. I’ve given Paul the Demon some beats to work on as well; “Hardcore” for AlteredStatus, “SeedKast”, “I’m On My Way” and “Record Drop” for “By The Time I Get Back”.

The instrumental of “SeedKast”, currently on my myspace page, will feature Poppa Justify and me on the vocals. I’ve also tapped P.J. to lay down part of the track “I’m On My Way”.

Shit is coming along nicely… more news and (maybe) music by Friday.

Last night i had the opportunity to observe one of the best shows of my life: The Flaming Lips @ The Aragon Ballroom. Every other band that is playing live shows for people need to take the time and find a way to see these guys live. It really was like New Years Eve all night with those guys - non-stop party. Great show, great times.

Graduation

I just got a chance to listen to Kanye West’s new album “Graduation”, set to drop 9/11, and let me say this – based off of my first impression; NO WAY is this album one of the top 10 greatest hiphop records of all time. If anything, maybe it’ll make the top 50 (or 100). I would even go as far to say that his second album “Late Registration” would make it closer to the top 10 than “Graduation”. Most of the beats are banging and off the hook, but Kanye seems to still fall short when it comes to his rhymes. (He has also declared himself one of the top 5 greatest eMCee’s of all time).

Don’t get me wrong, Kanye’s skills as an eMCee have improved greatly over the years, however this album almost seems a little campy and predictable when compared to its predecessors, especially when it comes to the lyrics.

Now I’m not bashing the record by any means; this shit is hot. I just feel its bit much for Mr. West to claim that “Graduation” will be one of the top 10 best hiphop albums of all time…

First off - Happy Birthday to everyone's favorite demon, Paul.

“By The Time I Get Back” is coming along… I’ve been working on the first track off the album “SeedCast (on my way)” – this track is nothing like anything I’ve done before – I’m pretty sure yall are going to love it. My thoughts on it right now: cinematic intro. I’m going to talk to Poppa Justify this weekend about laying the chorus down for it and I will be doing the verses. It’s been about 2 or 3 years since I last wrote any lyrics – so last night was like opening an old dusty book I’ve left on the shelf and forgot about. I’ll have an instrumental cut of the track up sometime next week.

In other news…
Last night the AlteredStatus crew was in full effect!! Paul the Demon (BeelzePaul), Poppa Justify, Mojo, the Blvr and I sat down and worked out some old tracks for our new live set. We worked on “Waitless” and “Feelin’ Good”, both of which came out extra funky. We’re all pretty pumped about it and can’t wait to show yall what we got under our sleeves. Look for some shows some time this fall.

AlteredStatus T-shirts are still in the works. Once I get my shit together, we’ll begin the short-run production of the shirts. More info soon.

JB, who had recently tore a ligament in his left hand, has confirmed he will be joining AlteredStatus in the studio after all. He won’t be shredding the ax like originally planned. Instead, he will be accompanying the band with his “mad” keyboard skills. It’s going to be tight. JB will also be making an appearance or two on “By The Time I Get Back”. Plenty o’ keys and vocals will be provided by the “Begotten” guitarist – expect nothing but the best.

This week I will be narrowing down the choices for the play list for “By The Time I Get Back”. I’ll be posting it here and will have some demo tracks up by the end of the week.

Unfortunate news from the AlteredStatus camp; good friend and guitarist JB has torn a ligament in his hand and will be unable to play for the next couple of months. Fear not, with time and rehabilitation, JB will be back to his ole finger pickin’ self, adding a much needed flavor to AlteredStatus. Until then, Mojo, from Chicago band “Maurice” will be joining us in the studio to record new tracks for the upcoming AlteredStatus album.

Very little work was accomplished last night in the studio, as the bar below me, owned and operated by my landlord, had officially opened up for business. Needless to say, a plethora of Chambly and PBR was devoured by me, Poppa Justify (AlteredStatus), Mojo and Matt (of Maurice). After a few pints, I ventured back upstairs and began reconstructing old (circa 2004-2005) tracks. Some are still hot and ready to be molded into a fine piece work, while others still fell short after all this time.

I’ve found myself somewhat torn on the issue of vocals. I am by no means an eMCee. However I do consider myself a closet lyricist with the potential to really say something – something with meaning. I’m also friends with some great vocalists with creative writings and I look forward to tapping into them real soon.

Knowing my nature, you will most likely find some sort of vocals on a couple of tracks off “By the Time I Get Back” – but for the most part, it will remain mainly instrumentals…

… this might get longer than EP.

So I decided to start a Blog about my upcoming EP "By The Time I Get Back"... I tend to make a lot of changes before I even release anything, so I figured having a Blog will force me to keep to my decisions instead of flip-flopping back and forth between ideas.

From now on, until the release the EP, I will be posting everyday with updates (audio, photo, video, etc.) on the progress of this projects and others I am currently involved with.
